 Introduction to Aviation for Sensor Operators

This course is designed for airborne sensor operators and ground staff who have little or no experience in aviation and/or radio communications. It provides an introductory awareness to the basic principles involved in aviation and starts to instill the “thinking operator” ethos to the task and mission considerations, coupled with basic communications knowledge and practical skills.


EO/IR (Foundation and Advanced)

Quickly becoming the most widely fitted sensor type, understanding the capabilities and limitations of the EO/IR sensors is essential to exploit the sensor’s potential mission value. 

The course examines the theory of EO/IR sensors and how to exploit them for various mission types, before exploring the more practical aspects of sensor and platform placement, menu navigation and advanced features in the practical simulator phase.

Advanced modules such as image interpretation, small arms recognition and full motion video (FMV) exploitation are available to more experienced operators.

Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR)

The ISTAR foundation and intermediate courses are intended for aircrew operators employed on a multi-sensor aircraft and is ideally suited to sensor operators and tactical commanders alike.  The first phase of the course explores the principles of the different sensor types, mission types, planning, tactical considerations and the softer skills essential for effective crews (CRM, teamwork, communications and airmanship).

The second phase of the course is carried out on ASG’s Sensor Mission Trainer (SMT) simulator and in the Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC).  The course attendees carry out the planning and execution for realistic mission scenarios, one half of the course acting as the aircrew in a modern, multi-sensor ISTAR/ISR aircraft, the other half acting as the CAOC staff, analyzing the sensor products and coordinating the overall mission, communicating directly with the aircraft using simulated radios and mIRC.

Acoustics/Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)

“Out of sight, out of mind” – the submarine has always attempted to conceal its activities and is often overlooked until it is too late.   An effective ASW capability therefore requires highly skilled operators with a specialist knowledge of oceanography, submarine types and sound sources. 

An unlocated, potentially hostile submarine poses a significant threat to naval forces, diverting resources and increasing alert states unnecessarily.  Furthermore, an enemy submarine threat cannot be accurately assessed nor dealt with until it has been located and is being tracked, requiring an expert ASW capability.

This course explores the principles of oceanography, diesel and nuclear submarines, submarine operations and the principles behind detecting, identifying and tracking enemy submarines with passive and active acoustic sensors.
